Moments in the History of The Peoples Bank
All of this past history has culminated into the excellent, sound, independent bank we have become today. This history of consistent and steady growth has been accomplished without benefit of mergers. We still maintain our independence and have no intention of entering into a merger with any other bank. We want to continue to grow and progress with the community. We expect to have the pleasure of accomplishing this with the continued dedication of our employees and continued friendship, confidence and good will of our present customers, and we look forward to serving many new customers.
Peoples Bank of Kent County Maryland has had only five presidents in
its history. Dr. H. Benge Simmons, who was the first president and who
served from 1910 until his death in 1945. Charles F. Wheatley, Sr. who
served from 1946 until his death in 1956, and A. Parks Rasin, Jr. who
served from January, 1957 to 1975. After the untimely death of President
Rasin E. Roy Owens assumed the presidency in September, 1975. In May 2000,
Thomas G. Stevenson became the fifth president. Mr. Elmer E. Horsey was
elected Chairman of the Board effective January 1, 2005 due to Mr. Owens
retirement from the Board of Directors effective December 31, 2004.
Mr. Robert A. Moore was elected Chairman of the Board effective January 1,
2006 due to Mr. Horsey's retirement from the Board of Directors effective
December 31, 2005. Under the present guidance of Chairman Moore and
President/CEO/CFO Stevenson the bank continues to grow. Its family
of employees continues to respond to the challenges of modern banking with
dedication and friendly service.
We are proud of the past history of our bank. No account of the past would be complete, however, without reference to the famous bank holiday in 1933 when bank failures were becoming numerous and the authorities decided all banks should close for a period of time, for the purpose of examination of their financial condition. The Peoples Bank was examined and was found to be in sound financial condition, and shortly afterwards was permitted to open on a 100% basis. Many other banks were not so fortunate. The banks were closed February 25, 1933, and The Peoples Bank was one of but two banks in Kent County which was permitted to open on a 100% basis as per a list appearing in The Baltimore Sun on March 15, 1933. We are proud of our record that no depositor ever lost a penny in our history; nor did a depositor ever have to wait for his money or have to accept stock in lieu of deposits that could not be immediately withdrawn. This record is well remembered by many Kent Countians today, and was one of the most important factors in the growth and good reputation of our bank.
